Annual Congregational Meeting: Sunday, May 19 at 1:00 pm in the Sanctuary

Connection

We welcome you wherever you are on your journey.

Bound by courageous love, growing in spirit, and inspiring compassionate action!

The Board of Trustees is delighted to announce that on Sunday, March 3, the congregation overwhelmingly voted to affirm the recommendation of the Ministerial Search Committee to call Rev. Krista Taves as Eliot Unitarian Chapel's next settled minister. We rejoice as we look forward to Rev. Krista's ministry.

Heartfelt gratitude goes to the members of the Search Committee – Bob Boyd, Janis Cox, Tanya Hull, Carl Serbell, and Rob van Alstyne – who shepherded the search process this past year.

Welcome to Eliot Chapel's Sunday service!

“Flower Communion” – Rev. Krista Taves

Every spring, Unitarian Universalist congregations across North America celebrate the Flower Communion, a ritual created by the Revs. Norbert and Maya Capek who served the Prague Unitarian Congregation in Czechoslovakia between the World Wars. This is a treasured ritual that many of us wait for. On Flower Communion Sunday, everyone is invited to bring flowers to worship. During the service we gather the flowers into large bouquets to symbolize the beauty of the gathered community. Then each person takes a flower home with them to symbolize that we carry this beauty with us until we are together again.

This Sunday, bring flowers! They can be from your garden, from the woods, from the grocery store, from the gas station! Just bring flowers. You don’t have to be a member to participate. Everyone is welcome. This is an intergenerational service so bring some for the kids. Bring extra if you can for our guests and those who come without so everyone can participate.

Featured musicians: Eliot Chapel Choir; David Nalesnik, piano.

Sundays at Eliot Chapel

The best way to learn about Eliot Chapel is to come to a worship service. Visitors are always welcome!

We meet in our historic sanctuary each Sunday at 9:45 and 11:15 am. Next week, our summer schedule begins and we will have one service at 10:00 am. We livestream our service for your convenience.

  • How do I find Eliot?

Eliot Chapel is located at 100 S. Taylor Avenue in Kirkwood, Missouri.  We are at the corner of Taylor and Argonne, across the street from the Farmer's Market.

Click here for directions to Eliot Chapel.

Click here for a map with parking information.

  • Where do I park?

There are two small lots behind the church that may be accessed from Madison (the street that runs right along the railroad tracks just south of the Chapel). There are a few spaces reserved for Visitors in the closest lot to Eliot.

Newcomers may park in the Farmer's Market spaces on Argonne Rd. between Taylor and Kirkwood Rd, but members and friends are requested to leave these parking spaces for Farmer's Market customers.

There are public parking lots across from the Farmer's Market and just west of the Market.

There are also a few business lots off Argonne Rd.

Click here for a map with parking information.

  • What should I wear?

There is no dress code at our church. People wear what they are most comfortable in, and it varies from "Sunday Best" to shorts and sandals or jeans and a sweatshirt, or anything in between.

  • What about my kids?

Children of all ages should attend the worship service with their family. Activity bags with crayons and UU coloring pages are available at each sanctuary entrance. Families may also use Adams Hall for freedom of movement while the service is livestreamed on the large-screen television.

The nursery is closed from July 2 to August 6 for staff vacation. The nursery will reopen on Sunday, August 13.

Check out more information about our Religious Education program.

  • What type of music will I hear?

An inspirational blend of traditional and contemporary, selected in collaboration between the Minister and Music Director. Participants are volunteers and guest soloists.

“Make It Better With Make-Believe!” – Rev. Craig Schwalenberg

Ever play Let’s Pretend? Or visit the kingdom of Make-Believe? We’re all too old for that now… aren’t we? I certainly hope not. Grab your chalk, hop on the trolley, board the magic school bus – a better world and better lives are waiting for us.

About our guest speaker: Rev. Craig's preferred pronouns are per/pers

(short for person, first coined by Marge Piercy in the 1976 novel, “Woman on the Edge of Time”) He/his or they/their are also acceptable.

Rev. Craig Schwalenberg is an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister raised in the Midwest and transplanted to New York. After 15+ years serving as a parish minister and interim minister, per has started a new community ministry as Your Game Minister – sharing the fun and wisdom where spirituality and play cross paths. Pers ministry is one of connections, storytelling, hospitality, and games. Rev. Craig is co-author of the RPG social justice curriculum, Building a Better World.

Progress Pride Flag

Each of us has worth and dignity, and that worth includes our gender and our sexuality. As Unitarian Universalists, we not only open our doors to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, we value diversity of sexuality and gender and see it as a spiritual gift. We create inclusive religious communities and work for LGBTQ justice and equity as a core part of who we are. All of who you are is sacred. All of who you are is welcome.
